What does the future hold? The Road Warrior, Gattaca or something in between?

[Markzilla] Markzilla - Apr 23, 2005 11:24 pm Reply

I'd read this article today and was wondering how people see the direction society will be taking over the next couple of decades.

Will we be living The Road Warrior, scrabbling for the precious juice and the basic necessities? Perhaps a world like Minority Report, with hovercars and holograms. Maybe Gattaca with space travel and genetics playing a very strong role.

I'm leaning towards The Road Warrior at this point.

I hear in Nova Scotia that the men are all gorgeous hunks with nothing to do but please their women.

Well... the please their women part may be true. We'd have to qualify the first sentence by swapping "all" for "some."

Et tu Zilla? You're not helping me here bro!

Zilla, I received in the mail brochures from Dalhousie University in Halifax. Anything you can tell me about it?

Other than "halifax rocks" and "Dal consistantly rates high on every major poll of Higher education schools?"

I dunno.... `Zilla, what do you think? :)

Turtle, can you send me an email asking specific questions and I'll check it all out for ya.

Since oil is the fuel that enabled the growth of modern civilization, and all industrialized countries now rely on it to an extraordinary extent. Seeing how critical it is to industrial agriculture, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, much of the clothing industry, and a vast array of others. And if the various experts are correct (which I think they are) about being at or past peak oil production then we are in for a hell of a ride. I'll put it this way: we can kiss our lifestyles goodbye. It will change everything.

I can definitely see "The Road Warrior" scenario coming to fruition and I'm amazed how well it was done by concentrating on the automobiles (transportation), the oil (energy), the communal system (hoarding and protecting of food and fuel) and the rest. The bad news is that this movie could be frighteningly close to what the future holds for us, the good news is I just saved a lot of money by switching my car insurance to Geico.

LMAO @ Geico.

That's ok Zilla. I found their website. I'd love love love love love love love to go to school in Nova Scotia but it's just too far away from my family. If I was 10 years younger (and my parents as well) I would definitely consider it. I'm not going to completely put it on the backburner until I see what my parents are doing after my dad retires at the end of May. So if I decide to give it more consideration, I will keep your offer in mind. Thank you!

my votes would be either

a) Waterworld (global warming might be a bigger issue than the oil running out, eventually)

or

b) some weird combo of Farhenheit 451, Brave New World, and Burning Chrome

yes I like post-apocalyptic sort of sci-fi. particularly William Gibson's semi-impenetrable psycho-genius.

maybe it'll be more like Demolition Man?

How about Judge Dredd?

Let's hope the future is not as miserable as Contact.

Planet of the Apes (original)?

Howzabout:

A combination where humanity fails to put any thought into constraints on the development of nanotechnology and biotechnology and that the merging of the two will lead to mass destruction that will literally be worse than a nuclear war.

ST:NG will only happen if we figure out the replicator technology so that anyone can create anything they want at any time (although the cynic in me thinks that human greed will override the ability to provide enough for all).

In a way, that is ST:TNG. Wouldn't that be us becoming the Borg?

[Watterswoman, Muddy]Muddy Watterswoman - Jul 4, 2005 1:40 pm (#49 of 50) Reply

Resistance is futile.

Yes, I suppose it would. My agreement about happy shiny people through the prism of ST:TNG and the replicator was a comment on the possibilities for earth. With the infinite number of galaxies out there, I'm sure evil exists somewhere - it exists here already. I was speaking to the possibilities that earth solves her own problems (to the point where we can explore the galaxy(ies).

[EDIT]...I was going to delete, because that sentence is so garbled. But I'll keep it there. I'm chalking the conveluted structure up to sleep deprivation....

And you got that point across quite well when you stated it. I just thought that line was funny given the context of the rest of the post.
